Diet in Chronic Kidney Disease

Diet and Kidney Health

What you eat plays a big role in protecting your kidneys. A kidney-friendly diet can help slow down CKD and keep your body in better balance.

Why it matters:

  • The right diet reduces strain on your kidneys.

  • Helps control blood pressure, blood sugar, and waste buildup.

  • Can lower the risk of complications like swelling, bone problems, and heart disease.

Key diet tips for CKD:

  • Limit salt (sodium): Too much salt raises blood pressure and makes swelling worse. You should limit sodium to 2000 mg per day.

  • Watch protein intake: Animal protein pieces should be the size and thickness of your palm, per meal and two meals a day.

  • Balance fluids: In later CKD, you may need to limit how much you drink.

  • Check phosphorus and potassium foods: Some patients need to avoid foods high in these minerals.

  • Choose fresh foods: Avoid processed and packaged foods high in hidden salt and phosphorus. Avoid processed meats, lunch meats, canned soups etc.

What you can do:

  • Work with your doctor or dietitian
