What is CKD?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) means your kidneys are not working as well as they should, for a period of time. Kidneys normally filter waste and extra fluid from your blood. When they don’t work properly, waste can build up in your body.
Why it matters:
CKD often develops silently with no symptoms in early stages.
If not treated, it can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, anemia, and even kidney failure.
Signs and symptoms (may appear in later stages):
Fatigue or weakness
Swelling in ankles, feet, or hands
Foamy or bloody urine
Shortness of breath
What you can do:
- Get regular blood and urine tests if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or family history of kidney disease.
- Control blood sugar and blood pressure to protect your kidneys.
- Avoid smoking and excess salt in your diet.
- Stay in touch with your doctor for follow-up care.
